How to Get Frozen Rolls to Rise Faster

Frozen rolls are great for a homemade roll taste with minimal effort. The only downside is that they can take forever to rise! Depending on the time of year, ambient temperature, and humidity, your frozen rolls can take even 6 hours to thaw and rise! Let’s skip all that boring wait time. Here are tips on how to get frozen rolls to rise faster.

How to Get Frozen Rolls to Rise Faster

1. Thaw in the refrigerator overnight

One way to get frozen rolls to rise faster is to let them thaw in the fridge overnight. This means that when you pull them out in the morning, they will already be thawed and are ready to rise. The only downside to this is that you have to plan when you want the rolls. This won’t help you get a quicker rise in the moment.

2. Put in a warmed oven

Some people recommend putting frozen rolls in the oven with the light on to rise. This may not be warm enough to actually help speed up the process. It also could be too warm depending on your oven light. It’s hard to know!

One way to turn your oven into a homemade proofing box is to turn on the oven to 200 ºF for a minute or two, then turn it off. This will warm up the oven without making it too hot. The only downside to this is that if you need to use your oven during the hours the rolls are proofing, you won’t be able to.

3. Place next to boiling water

Some people swear by the boiling water method! To do this, you’ll need to boil some water and place it next to your rolls in an enclosed space. This could be the microwave, the oven, or even a cabinet. This method requires some time to boil the water, and is a bit less reliable than the others. Plus, you will have to dirty another pot, and who wants to do that?

4. Use a proofing mat

The most reliable way to shorten the thaw and rise time for your frozen rolls is to use a proofing mat. A proofing mat will provide consistent heat to the rolls to allow them to thaw and rise very quickly. With a temperature-controlled proofing mat, you can know exactly how warm your rolls are getting to perfectly time your proof.
